To Be Or Not To Be

The plot was really good actually, i enjoyed it alot and the MC and ML's trope UNTIL,

But i guess it's still super good and i enjoyed the Angsty and funny and also lovydovy chapters. It was truly a wild and fun journey throughout this danmei!!!;;

Really interesting characters and story

Okay so. You saw the rating. Calm yourself. I'm gonna explain. Sit. No. Not there. A bit farther. You have... an odor about you. Yeah, farther still. There. Good. Let's start. 

I like this one. I really do. I swear. But... From a technical standpoint, it has clear limits. 

1) The art is fine. At best. I think the most problematic parts are the faces, which the art style renders sloppily. Character design isn't that great, too. Anatomy has its up and downs. Overall a bit washed out, budget starved and, naturally, censored to héll and back, as it's tradition. 

2) Writing. It's actually tricky to evaluate, for some pretty complex reasons. I suspect that To be or not to be, in its original language, isn't written badly at all. It uses lots of chinese poetry and song references that enrich its characters, but this means that localization becomes difficult if not impossible. Of course, even the normal dialogue is localized in a formulaic way. 

The consequences are a weak writing form and stereotypical character expression. That much is for all to see. It's your standard low budget Chinese translation & localization, which is usually plenty for this kind of stories. It fails the manhua here, tho. It deserved better.

That's because this one has a sincerity, a clear and heartfelt honesty in its plot, that usually wuxia tales lack. The themes are interesting: should one choose revenge, or love? Can you have both? What are the consequences? It's not afraid to kick you in the gut, and it's well paced. Mostly. 

The characterization is simple, but it works. It works well, I'd dare say. It can and will convey a lot of emotion, be it pathos, hilarity or genuine warmth, but the limits remain. With all of my goodwill, I cannot go beyond a 8+ on the Ivern Scale™️. But I'm not giving the grade lightly, I'm judging it on the same terms as the best Korean works. It deserves it.

This is genuinely an emotional roller coaster done right. I have cried A LOT every single time i reread this. Its going down as one of my ALL TIME favorite manhuas ever. The plot and dynamics between characters is very moving, and character development is shown in such a realistic way that it just makes you want to hug all of them. Even though the concept is unoriginal, the way the author played it and made it slightly comedic was a very unique and smart take on this. A very well done 🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷
